A long-lost story from dark by-lanes.
Of dusky homes and sooty window panes.
The tale began with a happy family life.
Until forever gone was her father’s wife.

There was the advent of an evil another.
Her two daughters and the stepmother.
The young Cinderella with a frozen life
As the world goes on like a bee hive.

Cinderella, the stepmother did goad.
Her older daughter looked like a toad.
This new life, Cinderella did resent.
Joys to her, nothing meant.

Oh! So vain , the lady and her daughters-two.
While troubled Cinderella boiled the stew.
They were haughty, bad and arrogant.
That evening came home an announcement.

‘An invite for everyone and all.
From the palace’s towers tall.
Twelve days forth, in the fall.
Come, join the Prince’s Grand Ball’

The evil three squealed in delight.
The daughters were unmarried, the time was right.
The scroll was hidden from Cinderella’s sight.
All up until the Grand Ball night.

In the palace, preparations were made.
Lights set out, tables were laid.
All was dazzling, everything looked great.
Unknown to all, awoken had fate.

And that night, no one slept.
Left all alone, Cinderella wept.
The pots were done, the carpet swept.
All dressed up, the evil three had left.

They’d picked out costumes in gold and green.
Dazzling jewellery , ugly faces and lots of sheen.
Leaving Cinderella alone, mean they’d been.
Later, the scroll Cinderella had seen .

Cinderella, she wanted to be at the palace.
But miserable looks her pretty, young face.
For she had no dress, no shoes, no necklace.
Worthy of the occasion to grace.

Cinderella feeling so very sad.
Quickly pulled her stepmother’s I-pad.
A long while since she’d been on the net.
Suddenly, in an online chat, her Fairy Godmother she met.

Seeing the disaster of a scene,
The Fairy Godmother jumped right out the screen.
Cinderella was surprised, knocked off her feet.
Still a ‘Good Evening’, she managed to greet.
And she offered the Godmother a seat.

She knew how to Cinderella, they’d been unfair.
So , as she settled into a chair,
She waved her wand over Cinderella’s hair.
And instantly, a pink hair band appeared there.

Another wave, a pretty little dress.
Cinderella looked ready to impress !
Scared yet excited, Cinderella did tremble.
Shiny glass slippers completed her ensemble.

Turned into a carriage – a pumpkin orange.
Six white mice into horses- was it strange !
A cockroach turned into a coachman.
Carefully, Cinderella, she did scan.

“Something’s missing.” Then was added a ring on her toe.
“There ! Now, my darling, you’re good to go. “
“You’re all set to just steal the show. “
“There’s just a little you should remember & know.”

“When you hear the midnight bells chime,
Remember ,to return home, it’s the time.”
“It’ll be a sudden end to all your grandeur.
Rush straight here, Cinderella. Do not wander.”

She rode to the ball. She had a time-grand.
Slowly, quickly flowed the time’s sand.
She was asked to a dance, by the Prince of the Land.
Glaring enviously, the evil three did stand.

Cinderella & the Prince danced & talked a long while.
She was smitten by his Charming smile.
He was won over by her beautiful voice.
He loved her hair, her dance & her poise.

Suddenly, on the grand clock, Cinderella lay sight.
“What’s your name?” .It was 5 minutes to midnight.
Mid-question, leaving the Prince hanging,
Against the marble stairs, her glass slippers clanging.

Yearning for the nameless girl, the Prince did frown.
Early next day, a search party went all over town.
In her frantic haste to rush from there,
Cinderella had left a slipper on the stair.

Every lady of the land tried the slipper of glass.
Not one was a perfect fit , though, alas.
After a week of futile search
Convinced that of pretty ladies there wasn’t dearth.

They then proceeded to give the Prince advice.
“Marry another.” He dismissed them in a trice.
Suddenly exclaimed , cursing his memory rotten.
Cinderella’s lane, they had forgotten.

To the forgotten lane, they rushed at a frantic pace.
To admit their folly would be a big disgrace.
Quickly ushering the royal men in.
The evil three did broadly grin.

The chosen girl was Cinderella, they had no clue.
Both daughters tried to squeeze into the shoe.
Cinderella, working away in a corner.
Pleasantly surprised when the men called on her.

The evil three Cinderella did mock.
Soon they were in for a rude shock.
The glass slipper was a total perfect fit.
The men’s faces , in delight, lit.

Bursting into an array of wide grins,
The men carted Cinderella off to the Prince.
Cinderella & the Prince were married next day.
And marched to the palace to shouts of ‘Hurray’.

It was a new life full of laughter.
Cinderella & her Prince lived happily ever after.
